Samsung Launches MicroLED TV Cost Reduction Plan

Many consumers are deterred from MicroLED TVs due to their high prices. Recently, Samsung has launched a project to reduce the cost of MicroLED TVs, with the goal of reducing production costs to 10% of the current level in the next 2-3 years. 



 High manufacturing costs are one of the biggest obstacles to the popularization of MicroLED TVs. MicroLED technology involves multiple cross-domain industries, including LED, semiconductors, and upstream and downstream supply chains of panels, which increase the complexity and cost of R&D and production. Mass transfer is one of the key technologies to achieve large-scale cost reduction, but the technology still faces major challenges. 

 

Currently, the price of MicroLED TVs is significantly higher than that of OLED or QLED TVs. For example, Samsung's MicroLED TVs usually cost more than $100,000, while in the Chinese market, 110-inch and 89-inch MicroLED TVs are priced at $150,000 and $100,000, respectively. 

 

Although some companies such as PlayNitride are working to drive down the price of MicroLED TVs by reducing the cost of the entire supply chain, overall, each link in the supply chain still has high costs. 


It is worth mentioning that Samsung Display and LG Display have slowed down their investment in the Micro LED field due to high production costs, insufficient application demand and insufficient profitability caused by overheated competition. In particular, Apple canceled its Micro LED smartwatch cooperation with ams Osram in early 2024, which once again raised doubts in the industry about the commercial application of Micro LED. 

 

However, Samsung Electronics now seems to hope to reduce the cost of Micro LED, promote the industrialization of Micro LED TVs, and gain the first opportunity in the market application of Micro LED technology.
