Renesas Acquires Sequans to Expand 5G/4G Cellular IoT Portfolio

supplier of cellular connectivity chips and modules for 5G/4G massive and broadband IoT. The acquisition was approved by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) on October 5, 2023.


The acquisition of Sequans is part of Renesas' strategy to expand its connectivity product portfolio and become a one-stop shop for customers developing next-generation IoT devices. Renesas and Sequans have been collaborating since 2020 to provide solutions that combine Renesas' embedded processors and analog front-end products with Sequans' wireless chipsets.


Sequans' cellular connectivity solutions are used in a wide range of IoT devices, including smart cities, smart homes, industrial automation, and wearables.


Hidetoshi Shibata, President and CEO of Renesas, said that the acquisition of Sequans is a major milestone in the company's strategy to become the leading provider of semiconductor solutions for the Internet of Things (IoT). He added that Sequans' cellular connectivity technology is the best in the industry and will complement Renesas' existing portfolio of embedded processors, analog front-end products, and other connectivity solutions perfectly.


The acquisition of Sequans by Renesas is a significant development in the IoT semiconductor market. Renesas is now one of the leading providers of end-to-end IoT solutions, including processors, connectivity, and sensors. This acquisition will strengthen Renesas' position in the competitive IoT market and give it a broader portfolio of products to offer its customers.
