Micron Technology Expands High-Bandwidth Memory Production to Meet AI Demand

Published: 7.16.2024

Micron Technology, a leading memory chip manufacturer, is taking significant steps to expand its high-bandwidth memory production capabilities to cater to the rapidly growing demand in the AI sector by establishing new production lines in the United States and considering additional capacity in Malaysia, alongside enhancing existing facilities in Taiwan.

Micron is set to build a pilot production line for HBM at its R&D facilities in Boise, Idaho. This expansion will include both production and verification lines, marking a significant enhancement of Micron's capabilities in the U.S. The Boise facility will play a critical role in the company's strategy to increase its market share in the HBM sector, which is vital for AI applications.

In addition to its U.S. expansion, Micron is considering establishing HBM production capacity in Malaysia. The country is already home to Micron's chip testing and assembly plants, making it a strategic location for further HBM manufacturing. This move is part of Micron's broader effort to diversify its production footprint and ensure a robust supply chain to meet the increasing demands of the AI market.

Micron's largest HBM production facility, located in Taichung, Taiwan, is also undergoing significant expansion. This facility has been a cornerstone of Micron's HBM production, and the enhancements are expected to boost its output capacity. The Taichung facility's expansion aligns with Micron's goal to increase its HBM market share to 24-26% by the end of 2025, a target that would bring it in line with its current DRAM market share.

The expansion of HBM production is crucial for Micron as HBM is a critical component in AI chips, enhancing their performance and efficiency. By tripling its market share in the HBM sector, Micron aims to position itself as a leading supplier of high-performance memory solutions for AI applications. This strategic initiative is expected to drive significant growth and innovation in the AI industry, supported by Micron's advanced memory technologies.
