Laptop market forecast: Arm CPU market share will reach more than 40% in 2029

Published: 10.28.2024

Recently, TechInsights released the latest research report, which pointed out that the share of Arm architecture in the notebook computer market will increase significantly.

TechInsights predicts that by 2025, laptops based on Arm architecture processors will account for 20% of global laptop shipments, and by 2029, this proportion will double to more than 40% (x86/Arm ratio is 60 /40 or so), the revenue share will reach 52%.

This represents a massive shift in x86 architecture. Independent research from TechInsights partially confirms Arm Holdings CEO Rene Haas's bold claim that the market share of Windows-on-Arm devices "could exceed 50%" over the next five years.

However, the apparent imbalance between Arm's market share and revenue share for laptops will be largely attributed to the fact that Apple's higher-priced laptops fall into the Arm camp. Much of the success of Arm architecture in laptops can be traced back to 2020, when Apple made a significant and successful transition to Apple Silicon starting with the M1 chip.

Tom's Hardware reported that the inevitable rise of Arm architecture in the notebook computer market is not certain.

Industry insiders believe that the latest x86 laptop chips from Intel and AMD have offset the biggest advantage promoted by Arm laptops - battery life. There's no real news yet on the next generation of Snapdragon X Elite/Plus chips, but it's known that AMD and Intel's development roadmaps will continue to put pressure on key qualities like performance and power consumption.

To be sure, Qualcomm is busy working on its next-generation Snapdragon X processor. There is also news that Nvidia and MediaTek will cooperate to develop PC processors. From the current point of view, it will not be easy for Arm to maintain the notebook market share momentum expected by TechInsights.
