Infineon Technologies Sells Manufacturing Sites in the Philippines and South Korea to ASE Technology

Published: 8.24.2024

Infineon Technologies AG, a global leader in semiconductor solutions, has completed the sale of its backend manufacturing facilities in Cavite, Philippines, and Cheonan, South Korea, to ASE Technology Holding Co., Ltd., to streamline operations and sharpen its focus on core competencies such as semiconductor design, innovation, and advanced technology development.

The sale, which involves two fully owned subsidiaries of ASE, represents not just a transfer of assets but a deepening of the strategic partnership between Infineon and ASE. ASE will assume operations of the Cavite and Cheonan sites, inheriting the current workforce and integrating these facilities into its global manufacturing network. The deal is expected to bolster ASE’s manufacturing capabilities while allowing Infineon to leverage ASE’s expertise in semiconductor assembly and testing to maintain high-quality production standards.

For Infineon, this move is part of a broader strategy to optimize its operational structure by focusing on high-value activities that drive innovation and growth. By divesting from capital-intensive manufacturing operations, Infineon is freeing up resources to invest more heavily in research and development, particularly in areas like automotive electronics, industrial power control, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. This shift is expected to enhance Infineon’s ability to respond to rapidly evolving market demands and technological advancements.

The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed, but the sale is anticipated to have a positive impact on Infineon’s balance sheet by reducing operational costs and releasing capital for strategic initiatives. Analysts suggest that this move could lead to improved profitability and operational efficiency, potentially boosting investor confidence and positively influencing Infineon’s market position.

With the sale now complete, Infineon is well-positioned to focus on its long-term vision of driving innovation across key sectors such as automotive, industrial, and IoT markets. The company’s decision to outsource backend manufacturing to a specialist like ASE underscores its commitment to excellence in semiconductor design and the development of cutting-edge technologies that power the digital transformation of industries.
