How is Taiwan’s GHEMP is Helping to Make Electronics More Sustainable?

Published: 7.26.2023

Taiwan's GHG Emissions Platform, known as GHEMP, is aiming to become a global standard for tracking and managing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the electronics industry. The platform was developed by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and is currently being used by over 100 electronics companies in Taiwan.

GHEMP provides a centralized platform for companies to track their GHG emissions. This includes emissions from their own operations, as well as emissions from their suppliers. The platform also provides tools for companies to manage their emissions, set targets, and track progress.

In recent months, GHEMP has been engaging with electronics suppliers around the world. The goal is to get these suppliers to adopt the platform and start tracking their GHG emissions. This would help to create a more transparent and accountable supply chain for the electronics industry.

Why is this important?

The electronics industry is a major contributor to global GHG emissions. In 2021, the industry was responsible for around 2% of global emissions. This is expected to increase in the coming years, as the demand for electronic products continues to grow.

Tracking and managing GHG emissions is essential for the electronics industry to reduce its environmental impact. GHEMP provides a valuable tool for companies to do this.

What are the benefits of using GHEMP?

  • Centralized reporting: GHEMP provides a centralized platform for companies to report their GHG emissions. This makes it easier for companies to track their emissions and identify areas where they can reduce emissions.
  • Target setting: GHEMP provides tools for companies to set targets for reducing their GHG emissions. This helps companies to track their progress and make sure that they are on track to meet their targets.
  • Supplier engagement: GHEMP can be used to engage with suppliers to track their GHG emissions. This helps to create a more transparent and accountable supply chain for the electronics industry.

What are the next steps?

GHEMP is still under development, but it has the potential to become a global standard for tracking and managing GHG emissions in the electronics industry. In the coming months, ITRI will be working to promote the platform to electronics suppliers around the world.

ITRI is also working to develop new features for GHEMP, such as tools for companies to calculate the carbon footprint of their products. This will help companies to make more informed decisions about their products and to reduce their environmental impact.
