China's Telecommunications Business Revenue Increased by 6.2% in 1H 2023

According to the Operation Monitoring and Coordination Bureau of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, in the first half of 2023, the overall operation of the communication industry was stable, and various major indicators maintained a good growth trend. The construction of new infrastructure such as 5G, gigabit optical network, and IoT accelerated, and the scale of network connected users continued to expand. Mobile internet access traffic grew rapidly.

 

The revenue of telecommunications business has steadily increased, and the total volume of telecommunications business continues to show a good growth trend. In the first half of the year, the cumulative revenue from telecommunications services reached 868.8 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.2%. The total telecommunications business volume, calculated based on unchanged prices last year, increased by 17.1% year-on-year.


The revenue from fixed internet broadband services has steadily increased. In the first half of the year, three top carriers (China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom) achieved internet broadband business revenue of 130.1 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.3%, accounting for 15% of telecommunications business revenue, an increase of 0.2 percentage points compared to the first quarter, driving a growth of 0.9 percentage points in telecommunications business revenue.

 

Mobile data traffic business revenue is growing at a low rate. In the first half of the year, three top carriers achieved mobile data traffic revenue of 335.6 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 0.2%, accounting for 38.6% of telecommunications revenue, driving a 0.1 percentage point increase in telecommunications revenue.

 

Emerging business revenue continues to grow rapidly. The three top carriers actively developed emerging businesses such as IPTV, internet data center, big data, cloud computing, and the IoT. In the first half of the year, the revenue from emerging businesses totaled 188 billion yuan, up 19.2% year on year, accounting for 21.6% of telecom business revenue, driving the growth of telecom business revenue by 3.7 percentage points. The revenue of cloud computing and Big data increased by 38.1% and 45.3% respectively year on year, and the revenue of IoT business increased by 25.7% year on year.


The revenue from voice services has slightly declined. In the first half of the year, three top carriers achieved fixed voice and mobile voice business revenue of 9.6 billion yuan and 57.24 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 7.5% and 2.5%, respectively. They accounted for a total of 7.7% of telecommunications business revenue, a year-on-year decrease of 0.7 percentage points.
